Google could add eSIM, Project Fi support to Chromebooks

Google is reportedly planning to add independent mobile internet connectivity to Chromebooks. While the option to include a physical SIM card slot in Windows-powered affordable laptops by OEMs failed, Google is planning to do something different. According to a report by XDA Developers, Google could add support for eSIM in its future Chromebooks along with Project Fi support.

This will allow you to use your regular mobile data independently and you will no longer need to hunt for Wi-Fi or connect your Chromebook with your mobile hotspot. With an inbuilt eSIM, using the Chromebook will be similar to using an Android smartphone as far as connectivity is concerned.

While eSIM technology is nothing new but India has just got support for eSIM connectivity, thanks to the launch of the Apple Watch 3 Cellular in partnership with Reliance Jio and Airtel Postpaid. Note that there is no physical SIM card or SIM card slot that is required for eSIM-enabled devices. The SIM card data on your physical SIM card is digitally transferred to the embedded chip or eSIM inside the device. Talking about telecom operators, only Reliance Jio and Airtel Postpaid is supporting eSIM technology.

The new eSIM technology is a good-to-have feature for “Always-on” laptops for which Qualcomm had recently launched its Snapdragon chipsets. While there is no news from Microsoft to include eSIM support for its “Always-on” mobile laptops, Google could take the lead if they actually introduce eSIM support for its upcoming Chromebooks.

Acer recently launched a range of Chromebooks-- Chromebook Spin 15 (CP315-1H), Acer Chromebook 15 (CB315-1H/1HT), Acer Chromebook Spin 13 and the Acer Chromebook 13. The new Acer Chromebook Spin 15 (CP315-1H) is claimed to be the industry’s first convertible Chromebook with a 15.6-inch display. The connectivity options include 2x2 MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2.
